PostHeaderIcon Director's News for May 2024

For starters, let me apologize with the lateness of this first Director's letter!  For those of you who do not know me, my name is Ryan Bakeman, your CRS Director. I am part of the Rodnoc Racing team that puts on Rallycross events in Southern California. We also host California’s only regional stage rally, The Ridge Rally! I have been a part of CRS since 2016, grown up around the sport and the folks that have been part of CRS since its origin. Enough about me though, this is about membership and our sport. So let’s start off with recapping how 2024 has started off so far.

2024 started off with our CRS Rally School. The rally school introduced 34 students to the addiction of our beloved sport of Rally. Students participated in zoom class instruction, in car instruction, in person car prep, opportunities to speak with current and past competitors, and actual co-driving practice. A special thank you to all that came out, the instructors, competitors, and members that made this possible!

For Rallycross, the year started out a little rough with weather forcing cancellation of multiple events due to flooding. However in March, Rallycross was kicked off in full force at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds! Since then, we have had 2 CRS events, one in The Antelope Valley and another in Marysville. Fresno Rallycross is holding their first CRS event next week on May 12th. Visit their social medias or head over to https://sidewaysdata.com/event/21/ to check out more information on how to sign up!

Can you believe that we are only 2 weeks away from The Oregon Trail Rally!?! Who else isn’t packed or still working on the race car? Just me? OTR is our first stage Rally on the CRS calendar. Currently 62 cars are registered, and I’m sure all are extremely excited for 3 action packed days that kick off the 2024 CRS Stage Rally Championship. For those of you that want to go or get involved but don’t have a race car, you should volunteer! Head over to https://www.americanrallyassociation.org/oregontrailrally for more information!

Olympus Rally in Shelton, WA. was 2 weeks ago, where we saw Brandon Semenuk and Keaton Williams bring the Subaru Motorsports WRX to 1st place overall! Congratulations to both Brandon and Keaton and to their team keeping them going. Also, a congratulations goes out to all teams who finished the race!

New this year was the running of the Wild West Rally for the America Rally Association (ARA), and it was won by Sam Albert and Krista Skucas in a Prancing Horse V8 Subaru (Yup, you read that right)! Congratulations on a successful event, hopefully an event that we can add to the CRS calendar in the future!

We’ve all heard of the American Rally Association or ARA but, some of us may not know what ARA does. ARA is the sanctioning body for all the scheduled Stage Rallies for CRS. To simplify everything they do; they bring the insurance, the team, and provide guidance to organizers to facilitate a safe event. Many rallies are scheduled through ARA, and if you are curious if there is one in your area head over to https://www.americanrallyassociation.org and click on schedule!

Now regarding membership, please help us push membership out to all of our competitors! We want to grow this sport and grow CRS. The only way we can do that is by talking about what we love and getting people to join! I am very excited to see what comes in the near future and I’m very proud to be a part of this community!

Have fun, drive fast, and be safe!

Ryan Bakeman
CRS Director

PostHeaderIcon Announcing the 2024 CRS Rally School with In-Person Instruction

Get the word out! The CRS Rally School is coming in March! The California Rally Series annual rally school will feature a hybrid format in 2024, combining online class sessions with in-person
instruction. Students will have the option of taking just the online course, or adding the in-person driving training and/or in-person co-driver training. The driving instruction will take
place on Saturday, March 9 at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds in Lancaster, CA, in conjunction with the Rodnoc Racing rallycross the next day (Sunday). The co-driving in-person instruction
will take place in Ridgecrest, CA on Saturday, March 30.

There will be four online classes taking place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting on March 5 with an introduction to rally and rallycross. The Zoom seminars will begin at 7 pm
Pacific Time and last for two to two and a half hours. Each session will feature three separate presentations, with plenty of time in between for question-and-answer sessions where students
can interact with our experienced instructors and panelists. Students will also have access to recorded versions of classes after each session.

Instructors include regional and national level championship drivers and co-drivers. Students taking the in-person driving course will need to provide their own vehicle suitable for
rallycross.* Two students may share a vehicle. In-person students should indicate if they are interested in two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive instruction.

Topics include:

  • How to get started in stage rally and rallycross
  • Basic and advanced rally driving techniques
  • How to prepare a car for stage rally (including what to look for when buying a prepared rally car)
  • Understanding controls and timing
  • Rally navigation from tulips to stage notes
  • Recce and writing your own notes
  • Advanced co-driving
  • Rally team management

ONLINE ENTRY AVAILABLE HERE:  https://www.rallydata2.com/

Cost is $60 for the online-only course, $170 for the online course plus the in-person driving instruction on March 9, or $160 for the online course plus the in-person co-driving instruction on
March 30. Cost for all three (online, driving and co-driving) is $300. Lunch is included. All options include CRS membership for 2024 (a $30 value). Students participating in the in-person
driving instruction will also receive a discounted entry to the rallycross on March 10. There is a minimum of 9 and maximum of 35 students for the in-person driving session, and a minimum of
4 and maximum of 9 students for the in-person co-driving session.

PostHeaderIcon Awards Banquet 27 Jan '24 - Sign Up Now!

I'll bet this announcement looks familiar, but trust me, it's new for the 2023 season!

It's that time again, time for us to recognize our 2023 Rally and Rallycross champions and to honor certain CRS members for their special contributions to our sport and to the California Rally Series.  Come join us for food, friends, awards, and camaraderie!   If your name is listed in blue in the championship listings, congratulations! It means you're getting a year-end trophy - a personalized photo trophy plaque!

To sign up go to https://www.rallydata2.com/index.php and click the "Sign Up for the Banquet" link.

Just like the last two years the banquet will be hosted at Cisco's Mexican Restaurant. People really seemed to enjoy the way we had time at the end of the awards distribution for bench racing and catching up with our rally friends in a non-competitive setting. Cisco's is located at 1712 E Avenida de Los Arboles in Thousand Oaks, California, 91362.  It's just off the Ave de los Arboles exit of the CA-23 freeway. CA-23 runs between the US-101 and CA-118 freeways.

Dinner will be a buffet featuring traditional choices like taquitos, beef and chicken fajitas, rice and beans, and tortillas, as well as vegetarian choices like cheese enchiladas and salad.  Desserts and soft drinks, as well as tea and coffee, will also be available.  For safety, the restaurant will provide servers for the buffet line.

The cost is $40/person, or $20/child under the age of 11.

Alcoholic beverages are available from a full bar, at your own expense.

The schedule is:

Happy hour:   5:00 to 6:00 PM
Dinner break: 6:00 to 7:00 PM
Awards:       7:00 to 9:00 PM

Note: The restaurant and bar opens at noon, so if you arrive early, you can grab an early snack or beverage.

If you'd like a fun drive to get to the restaurant, travel along Pacific Coast Highway (CA-1) from Santa Monica (the western terminus of I-10, the Christopher Columbus Transcontinental Highway) to CA-23 (north of Malibu), then take CA-23 (Decker Canyon Rd) all the way to the restaurant.

Nearby features include California Lutheran University, the usual shopping malls, the Reagan Library, and plenty of hiking trails. Malibu is about 15 fun miles due south, Ventura about 30 miles due west (or north, depending on signage), and Six Flags Magic Mountain is about 40 miles to the northeast.

There are several nice hotels in the area for our out-of-town guests, including a Hampton Inn, a Courtyard by Marriott, the Thousand Oaks Inn, the Quality Inn, and a Fairfield Inn in Moorpark.

Note: If you're unable to attend this year's banquet, please identify someone who will claim your trophy for you.  Thanks!

Best wishes to all for the upcoming 2024 season, and congratulations to everyone who competed in 2023.
